"I want to thank everyone on the Skowhegan Savings team and everyone who made
donations," said Karla Poulin, the Skowhegan Savings team leader. "I want to say that it was one of the most emotional events I have ever attended.
Despite the rain, blisters and body pain it was one of
the most rewarding things I have ever done and I'm sure
the team would agree. I kept saying to myself I can take
one more step, even though my body said no, because nothing
could be as bad as being told you have cancer."
Weeks prior to the event, the
bank held a yard sale to raise money. The bank's donation
of office furniture made the yard sale a huge success with
over $500 being raised. Additional money was raised through
team member sponsorships and donations received from the
bank's employees.
The Skowhegan Savings team kicked
off the event by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and
singing the national anthem. Cancer survivors and their
caregivers began by walking the first lap of the relay;
then the rest of the participants joined with a member
from each team continuously walking during the 18-hour
event.
